Tolerance, Free Will and Freedom of Religion

In the Qur’an there is a group of verses which specify that religion is to be accepted freely and cannot be forced upon someone, and this confirms that in Islam no one can be coerced, be told either to become Muslim or die.

“There is no compulsion in religion, for the truth has been made manifest from the false” (Qur’an 2:255)

Another verse:

“And call to the way of your Lord with the judgment and beautiful admonitions, and dispute with them with that which is beautiful…” (Qur’an 16:125)

There is also this verse:

“Had your Lord willed, all the people on earth would have believed. Do you want to force the people to become believers?” (Qur’an 10:99)

This verse demonstrates that if force was valid, God Himself, with His own Power of creation would have made believers of all the people, but belief is a thing that people must choose for themselves.

Thus, for these reasons the Prophet let others choose for themselves and so must the follower’s of Islam today.

In the Qur’an, God also says: “We only send the Messengers to bring good news and to give warning” (Qur’an 18:56)
